Outside of press interviews, I often spoke with these players casually in Korean during lunches, smoke breaks, and after parties. From all those conversations, a curious pattern emerged: Virtually every Korean pro gamer I spoke with told me they came from a working-class family.
When I brought this up to Korean coaches and players I spoke with in the Overwatch League , many of them were surprised. But upon reflection, most of them agreed that it was true. When I asked them how many Korean players they could think of who are the children of college graduates, they could only name a handful of exceptions. I spoke with over a dozen sources, including academics and Korean players and staff in the Overwatch League to find out why.
What emerged from those interviews was a story about how a high-risk endeavor like esports has traditionally attracted a certain class of competitors who come from families that have the least to lose and the most to gain.
Even Fate, who was described by his peers as an outlier since his father runs his own law firm, resisted the assumption that he grew up financially stable. Much of their decisions to go pro hinged upon schooling.
South Korea is a famously well-educated country where roughly 70 percent of students pursue higher education after high school. But he also described a difficult childhood with a mother who was handicapped and a father who was in and out of prison. For WizardHyeong, gaming offered an escape from a reality so hellish that as a 9-year-old, he stood over the edge of a building and contemplated suicide.
While his case is extreme, he confirmed that he knows several other Korean OWL players who plunged themselves into gaming to cope with problems at home, financial instability, or the pressure of living in a society that views academic excellence and a college education as the only legitimate avenue for a good life.
Esports, particularly the Overwatch League, seems to be another arena run by American corporations where young men of color are disproportionately represented as the dominant competitors, to the point where they are appraised as the best on the planet. Yeh attributed this to the looming obligation of mandatory military service that all Korean men must fulfill.
Many Korean players see conscription as the unofficial end of their esports careers. While some have returned to the industry as commentators or coaches after finishing their service, very few have come back to compete as players again. Some of these methods are more subtle, but others can bring significant boosts that can double or even triple the fps. Ironically, one of the more effective methods for smoothing out Minecraft 's performance is simply doing less in the game.
Focus on plainer, more level terrain, with less exploration, and fewer assets populating it. A useful trick related to this is to use the "WorldBorder" command in the game, which will set limits on how far the world can expand.
A smaller, simpler, less cluttered world in the game will prove far less demanding for Java as well as the hardware it's running on. Much of the performance of a PC game stems from the graphics card in use. Gamers often run their games without realizing their graphics card can get a bump through a simple, and fairly quick update to their graphics drivers.
The latest drivers can typically be found on the GPU manufacturer's website. To make this process even easier and more streamlined, download an automatic driver updater like Driver Easy. One might not think a blocky game like Minecraft is too demanding when it comes to horsepower, but it can be hardware intensive when constantly having to load assets from vast distances. Luckily, the render distance can be cut down quite a bit.
To do this, just click on " options " and go to " video settings. If this number is set above 12, it might be a good idea to move it down at least a few ticks.
Don't drop this too low, though, as navigation in-game may prove a bit tricky if it's below the eight-to-ten range.
While there are various in-game tricks that make for a smoother experience, there are a number of ways Minecraft 's framerate can be bumped up by tweaking some PC settings as well. One of the most effective is simply to close out other programs running at the same time, particularly those more hardware-intensive ones.
Pull up the Task Manager to get an idea of what programs are running, and clear out any non-essential software that's utilizing large chunks of memory. More RAM can now be allocated to Minecraft. In addition to the render settings, various other graphic details can be tweaked or dialed back in order to improve performance and framerate in Minecraft.
The block-building sandbox phenomenon known as Minecraft may not be the most visually appealing game, but it has its fair share of loyal fans. And despite its retro-style graphics, the game is one of the top resource-hogs of the gaming industry. You may think your device should handle it well, but FPS drops are far too common. It might be worth checking your FPS from time to time.
You can use the numbers as a baseline when adjusting your video settings or GPU settings to enhance your gaming experience. If you have the Game Bar enabled, check out the steps below:. Once the floating Performance panel comes up, you can customize it to display only the statistics you need.
Also, you can pin the Performance overlay to have it visible at all times or unpin it and bring it up at your leisure. Because Pocket Edition tends to have much smoother graphics than the original PC version, more and more players opt to play the game on their phones and tablets.
Luckily, you can change the settings and squeeze out more performance.
