I've actually had better results when using the format utility built into the drive itself. On mine you hold the two buttons for 5 or so seconds, wait for the display to change, let go and watch it count up to the max floppies it has room for on the disk. When reading or writing after power up or changing the disk number with the selection buttons, you basically have to fool the RM1x into realizing the disk has been changed.
Try doing a write to the disk and see if you get a disk change notification. If it does that then back out of the write menu and see if you can then read the files on the selected drive. This isn't the disk drives fault, it's the way the disk controller in the RM1x is.
I've tried all sorts of hand thrown switches on different jumpers to get that disk change notification to cause the RM1x to re-read the "disk" but it always caches the list in the previously selected "disk" causing me to do a fake write operation to get it in a place to then do what I want. It's a small pain in the butt to do this couple of seconds and I don't use a pile of disks.
If it was a sampler I might be frustrated. Compared to the normal button mashing operations to make a tune it's baby stuff. Real happy with the results. The unit I have has many more years life left especially with the availability of replacement parts. Ok I got this working. And so far it seems very stable to me.
