On my user's machine I am getting Event ID: and Are you getting the same? Lopez 0. Have you done any further updates on the SP3 users? Also, have you tried a secondary AV solution? Norton is indeed a resource hogger but I'm sure isn't the best. As a test have you tried recreating the user profile on 1 machine and have the user log on and off a few times?
I assume if the SP2 users aren't affected by this you should rollback the SP3 users to SP2 and try to find a solution before moving forward.
Wednesday, April 22, PM. Thursday, April 23, PM. Are the symptoms recounted in this thread just another manifestation of the problem in the thread: Unable to load profile when user is forced to change password? If you are using roaming profiles did the users save huge files to their documents or desktop folder? Does the user have large amounts of temp files store on their profile?
I avoid roaming profiles like the plague. Best to use a Home folder which is setup on the user's Active Directory account. I use ICSweep to clear off user temp files and Remprof utility to delete old profiles which have not been logged into in a long time. Wednesday, April 29, PM.
Are you using Roaming Profiles? Are you trying to push out any software at logon with a GPO? If so, the software may not be installing correctly and hanging the login.
Try disabling any GPO which is installing software at boot up or login. Also you might try removing Symantec AV using NoNav utility and see if you can log in without the problems. I've had SAV cause similar errors but once it was removed and reinstalled everything worked.
Was there ever a solution to this problem as I am having the same issue? Thanks, J. Friday, June 5, PM. Wednesday, December 30, AM. I am having the same issue. I starting upgrading a few machines to Windows 7, as the Windows 7 machine that I have has not had any issues. Two of the machines that I installed Windows 7 on, I logged in and there was no background, no icons, and no start menu. I had to press and hold the power button to get it to reboot. Once I rebooted and logged in again it seemed fine.
This issue doesn't seem to be limited to just XP machines unfortunately. I can't believe Microsoft doesn't have an answer yet. Tuesday, April 12, AM. Same problem here, DC and winxp desktops with roaming profiles. So far I have been deleting user accounts and copying their desktops to a new account. Which has been working but it is a pain. A real fix would be appreciated. User profile could just be toasted after all the malware, seeing how safe mode is working.
Then just move over any doc's or settings from the old broken profile. George, The Combofix worked perfectly. Thank you. Michael, I beleive that your solution would have worked also, I was just able to get George's solution to run first. Thank you for the quality responses. Combofix is pretty handy in killing viruses, but using it is similar to hunting gophers with hand grenades. You'll probably get them, but may not have much of a yard left afterwards.
