My solution was to repartition and install XP. You must download them. All special keys on the keyboard are software enabled, not bios driven, meaning you must run utilities for them to work, which uses resources. Overall Review: Grainy texture like pattern vissible when screen is runnin in native resolution and displaying black or dark solid colors. Fixed by flashine an unsupported version bios I found on the web. Problem not recognized by ASUS even though it's the longest thread on their crumby forum.
The posted XP camera driver does not work. Look carefully under the different tabs on the DL website, there are two versions of it, but the one that shows up when listing all drivers for XP is the one that doesn't work. Audio driver requires a "audio bus" driver before it will install. This is a 50MB download because it contains every language spoken on earth.
Very slow off of their website. All in all it's a great laptop, with great performance once you load XP, spend hours to download all the drivers, get them all working, and then flash the bios with an unsupported old version off of the web. Pros: One of the best Video cards available in a 15 inch laptop. The 1 gig of memory is a single stick so easily upgradable to 2. Fan vent is in the back instead of on the right or left sides.
Built in 1. At full load the laptop gets "warm" nothing past that. Runs games like BF,Doom3 etc flawlessly at high settings. Too much bloatware though it is easily Unistalled just time consuming The laptop is opened by a push button instead of a latch These tend to wearout quicker and could be a problem down the road.
Mouse buttons for trackpad are a single button that you push down as left or right.. Trackpad is not very sensitive needs more pressure then most for it to work. And the last ASUS update was in febuary of Pros: Just look at the specs - you can't go wrong, especially at this price! Get this laptop while it's still in stock!
The F3JP is very well-made - the case is actually quite compact NOT oddly-shaped like some of the newer Dells I've seen ; the ports are well-positioned around the 2 side vents; the keyboard has a great feel soft sounding keys ; and it just stays lukewarm, not hot. Vista can stall with little warning so you have to be patient. Check out the Eggxpert forum for F3JP-specific pointers! If you plan on using only Vista, I'd suggest you flash the bios.
Reading any text in Vista before the bios update hurt my eyes. Tested the graphics card with Sims 2 and really noticed the nuanced details and smoothness this card is capable of.
I was also impressed by Asus' thoughtful packaging - there is even a velcro tie for your cords! Cons: Personally, I find the shortcut keys quite useless except for the power button, of course - too bad they aren't programmable.
Also, the function key icons could be larger but no complaints whatsoever about the machine. So now i use this laptop as a desktop replacement and the DVI gives a beautiful picture.
I added a 1gb stick of memory and a 4gb sd card although im only using 2gb of it for ready boost and the other 2gb for audio downloads :D. Sold by: Newegg Shipped by Newegg. Learn More. Overall Review: I've heard complaints about asus f3jp laptops having grainy screens, but I have to say this was not a problem at all for me, and I have bios version Definitely needs the extra 1 gig of ram.
Overall, this laptop has great linux support, but you may need to install the proprietary video driver. Pros: Great LCD display, has an open ram slot, works good if all the stars and planets are in line.
Cons: Getting the computer set up was difficult, vista and the antivirus made sure nothing installed easily. There were lots of crashes and froze screens. Seems to work all right now everything has settled in, although a thorough tune up must be done to eleminate unnecessary programs running in the background. One game has picked up on the opengl as being inadequate. Overall Review: Good computer although seems bogged down by vista.
My old 2. It appears this same system was available with xp, there seems to be drivers for both OS available. Pros: I was wondering what kind of ram came with it so I could buy the same kind? Compared to Dell, HP, Gateway, Acer and all the other "home brand" laptops that are available to you - ASUS really gives you control of what you get and there are no questions as to me getting a future Lamborghini laptop from asus as I am quite comfortable with there notebooks as far as reliability and sustainment.
Cons: The optical drive that it comes with isn't the best. Sometimes you cannot even watch a DVD movie while running on your battery. It came with Vista Home Premium. ASUS website is slow all around the world and the you may have to download ALL the drivers and figure out which ones go to where and which ones are which. The touch drivers for XP never worked correctly. I love to disable my touchpad and use an external mouse but I had to settle with generic mouse drivers to get the touchpad to move correctly with Windows XP.
The only downside - I cannot disable the touchpad now, not even under Device Manager. I will check BIOS later. Overall Review: I've had my laptop for about 8 months. The X Comes with ample space. Vista has its own problems, mostly with AntiVirus. Comes with a bunch of useless software for the camera and wifi, etc. Wish it had the metal casing like V6V. Overall Review: Screen has a gray glow to it, but most laptops have this. Definitely makes up with a DVI port. Sold by: Newegg Shipped by Newegg.
