They're an ideal gift for this end of the year and will not only bring joy to the ones you give them but also will contribute to a great foundation that helps those in need! That said, the story is just fine but the artwork really does stand above. In a solid yet slightly predictable WWII fighter pilot tale, there are featured two main characters, one a German man and the other a Soviet woman both of whom are rather attractive He fights purely for the love of his country and his family.
The other main player, Lilya, is a fierce patriotic pin-up for the Soviets who are desperately battling to hold off the invading Germans. Lilya began her combat flying career as a member of the famous "Nachthexen" Night Witches , brave women who flew simple biplane aircraft on harassment and precision bombing missions against German positions.
Both are dedicated warriors and when they inevitably cross paths or flight paths things are not altogether straight forward. It took me a little while to solve the meaning of the title The Grand Duke. This is a great touch and very well thought out.
Intended for an adult audience, there's no shortage of action, some of it quite graphic literally LOL with lots of stuff being blown up, shot up and shot down. In a few places there is some nudity and soft sex, but this doesn't dominate and they form necessary parts of the overall story. The characterization is right on for the story, both central heroes are generally likeable and realistic although are a tad morally corrupt, which is probably understandable given their respective circumstances.
There's a fine mix of good guys and bad guys on both sides along with the obligatory scoundrels and bastards.
The subject matter appears to be very well researched and is reasonably historically accurate from what I can tell. To summarize, this is a satisfying graphic novel with an interesting story, top-notch presentation and good entertainment value. Even if the narrative was abysmal, I reckon that I'd still have finished it because the incredible art alone was enough to keep me interested. This was a very unusual plot for a graphic novel, and surprised me pleasantly with its visually stunning artwork, of a quality rarely seen in this medium.
The artist is very talented, and it's amazing to see how well he can paint aerial dogfights over a panoramic canvas. It almost feels like he drew from screen stills from a war film! And this beautiful art does marvels for the story, which I'm sure wouldn't come off so engrossing if the art had been done by someone else with a lesser command of visual storytelling and a different style.
As for the story itself, it narrates the lives of two pilots, one German and one Soviet, from the waning days of the Reich's victories on the Eastern Front in to the defeat of Germany in During that time, Luftwaffe night fighter ace Adolf Wulf and "Night Witches" Squadron ace Lilya Litvasky will come face to face during air combats many a time, decimating the opponent's squadrons and even coming close to killing each other, and will eventually meet each other on land, with unexpected consequences.
Of the two, the Oberleutnant is the better pilot in the beginning, because he's more experienced, and also the better equipped, for he pilots the Luftwaffe's quite new super jet fighter that's a pain to handle and a guarantee that one's life will be extremely short, which is nicknamed "The Grand Duke" after a certain species of enormous owl, that's supposed to be a ferocious bird of prey and is one of the biggest in Europe.
Wulf has a pet owl of his own, of this very species. And even if less experienced and worse equipped at the start, Lilya doesn't take too long to reach his same level of expertise, and that makes their aerial confrontations even more interesting, for you cannot guess who will shoot down whom.
That Wulf has a little daughter whose safety pushes him forward and Lilya has a complicated relationship with a fellow Soviet ace add a couple narrative threads on the side that provide needed pauses in-between flying missions and bombings.
